Know The Basics About Surf Fishing Tackle
October 16th, 2009Surf fishing is an exciting sport of catching (most often sea) fish without having to put to the open water. A broad term, surf fishing refers to all types of shore based fishing, including beaches, jetties piers, or man other vantage points. Selecting which surf fishing tackle is, of course, key however.
When selecting your fishing rod, a medium to heavy rod will be great, and whilst some surf rods go up to 12 feet in length, you should be good to go with anything from 7 feet and up. It is also necessary, of course, to ensure the rod is protected from corrosion from salt water.
For your reels, again medium to large will be good to handle the pull of the fish you’ll be hunting. Again, remember that salt water is corrosive, so reels should be thoroughly rinsed in fresh water after each trip.
A 14 pound test line will, in most cases be sufficient in your surf fishing tackle. However, you may want to go up to a 20 pounder, just in case something particularly large crosses your path; thought obviously ensure all other equipment is up to scratch!

Amongst the most common rigs for surf fishing are 2 hook bottom rigs and fireball rigs, whilst the set up of such should be one hook and a pyramid sinker; positioned somewhere around 12 inches below.
Whilst live bait pre-rigged kits are available from stores near most surf fishing hotspots; baits that work particularly well are squid, and shrimp which tend to be readily available. However, do not underestimate local advice and knowledge when baiting up.
Surf fishing is an extremely exciting sport, whether you have the right tackle or not! However, to really get the most, ensure your surf fishing tackle is well set up. And also check that there are any swimmers nearby!
